Application For Cooking School

from: Karlie Bestler

Once you've decided that attending a cooking school is the right decision for you and you've evaluated several cooking schools and determined which cooking schools are best for you, you'll need to begin the process of applying for admission.

Filling out an application is only the first step in pursuing your career in the field of culinary arts, but it's a very important step. In fact, if you do a poor job, you may never get to start your career because you won't be accepted into cooking school. Your application represents your first impression with the cooking schools you apply to. It's vital that you make this impression is a good one.

Admissions Requirements

It's common practice for cooking schools to post information regarding their admissions requirements on their website so that prospective students can read and download them. Typical requirements for cooking schools include:

*Proof that you have attained a high school diploma or GED, including high school transcripts.

*Your SAT or ACT score. This may not be required if you are applying to a culinary arts program at a cooking school or culinary arts institute that isn't associated with a college or university.

*A personal statement explaining your desire to study culinary arts and your career intentions. You may be able to use the same statement for more than one cooking school, but it's a good idea to tailor it to each cooking school you apply to.

*Letters of recommendation from previous employers and teachers.

*A work resume. Include any volunteer experience that you have.

*Payment of a non-refundable application fee.

Some schools may require more information, such as:

*Verification of age.

*Medical certifications.

*Documentation that establishes your ability to pay for cooking school costs. This may include financial records or loan statements.

*If you're an international student, you may be required to supply additional documentation and perhaps even take a standardized language test.

Applications can be sent by mail. Some cooking schools even allow students to apply completely online.

After they receive your application, some cooking schools will request that you come in for an interview. For your interview at cooking schools, make sure that you dress well and act in a professional manner. Other cooking schools may simply want you to write an essay or perform some other task that demonstrates your personality and your desire to succeed in a culinary arts program. Schools won't accept you if they're unsure about your commitment to the cooking schools program.

If you have any questions regarding admissions requirements for cooking schools and the process of applying, don't hesitate to contact the admissions office of the cooking schools you wish to attend. They'll be able to provide you with specific information regarding their application process and requirements.
